A major issue for economic growth and environmental preservation is that of driving innovation and bio-sourced sectors with a low or even negative carbon footprint. The bioeconomy, defined as food and non-food exploitation of biomass, could thus generate opportunities for sustainable economic development, particularly for agri-food companies. Some of these, such as Cargill or the large European agricultural cooperatives (Tereos, Vivescia, etc.), have already started to explore new technological paths for exploiting plant-based ingredients. Nevertheless, current knowledge on the strategies used by these companies in the field of the bioeconomy is limited.
