EFL : Survey on family and housing

Years : 2011
+

Producer : Insee

The Family and Housing Survey provides data to update analyses of fertility by generation, or by sociodemographic characteristics and geographic origin. It was designed within the framework of a partnership between INSEE (French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies), INED (French National Institution of Demographic Studies), DREES (French Directorate of Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics) and the CNAF (French National Family Allowance Fund. It enables a more detailed description of the diversity of family situations and quantifies minority situations that are otherwise inaccessible in the usual smaller surveys. This data enables fertility analyses by generation, or by sociodemographic and geographic origin to be updated. It furthermore provides data enabling comparison of information on three family generations (grandparents, parents, children), as well as addressing the issue of childcare. It also integrates new themes: the civil partnership pact (PACS), life in a non-cohabiting couple or with a person of the same sex, and blended families. It also addresses the themes of multi-residence and geographical mobility of families. Responses were collected by drop-off and pick-up of a four-page questionnaire for each in-scope person. The questionnaires were submitted personally by the census officials at the same time as the usual census documents, and then collected under the same conditions. The main objective was to interview all adults of the same sex, depending on the area in question: either all men or all women of at least 18 years of age in ordinary households. Since women are the main focus of the analyses, the ratio of men to women was approximately one man for two women.
