Today, the number of farmers is declining. Among the causes of the decline in the farming population are the non-renewal of generations and, at the same time, a little studied trend: farmers switching to other occupations. The objectives of this sociology PhD are: to understand the reasons why people leave the farming profession, how people leave the profession when it's not for retirement (transmission reconversion approach) and finally the future of former farmers. To this end, we are interviewing former farmers in order to understand the trajectories of reconverted farmers in Pays de la Loire. The analysis of these interviews is complemented by observations of systems that support farmers when they leave the profession. Finally, we want to draw up a national typology of departures based on database processing (COTNS, RA).
